The municipal government of Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan placed itself under a state of calamity on Thursday following severe flooding caused by Tropical Cyclones Luis and Maymay alongside the enhanced southwest monsoon, PNA reports

Data from the Sta. Barbara Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) showed that heavy rains and rising floodwaters affected 5,061 families across 15 barangays. Mayor Carlito Zaplan signed the declaration after receiving official recommendations from the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (LDRRMC) and an approved resolution from the Sangguniang Bayan.

According to the town’s public information office, “Under the declaration, the local government unit will have the legal basis to use the appropriate disaster fund for immediate response, relief, rehabilitation, and recovery efforts.” Officials added that the declaration also enables affected residents to access emergency financial aid and calamity support from government agencies.

The storm system damaged infrastructure and agricultural land across the municipality:

  • The Municipal Agriculture Office reported initial crop damages totaling PHP 19.95 million, primarily impacting rice and corn fields.
  • While most displaced residents have safely returned to their homes, four families remain sheltered in a local evacuation center as of Thursday.
  • Sta. Barbara is the latest Pangasinan municipality to enact emergency status, following similar declarations by Dagupan City and Mangaldan on August 11.
