Inaugural 100-Mile Ultramarathon in Ilocos Sur

According to PIA, the municipality of Gregorio del Pilar in Ilocos Sur successfully hosted the inaugural Battle of Tirad Pass 100-Mile Ultramarathon from May 28 to 30, 2026, to promote local eco-tourism and commemorate historical valor. A total of 16 seasoned athletes participated in the grueling extreme-endurance race, which traversed a challenging mountainous route across several municipalities in the province.

Joderick Macanas Morta, a 40-year-old runner from La Union, won the race by crossing the finish line in 24 hours, 24 minutes, and 38 seconds. Morta, a second-time 100-mile ultramarathoner, completed the course in just over half of the official 48-hour time limit. He described the route as both physically demanding and scenic, highlighting the mountain views and local hospitality.

The race route began in Candon City and passed through the towns of Santa Lucia, Santa Cruz, and Suyo before climbing toward Bessang Pass in Cervantes. Runners then crossed the boundaries of Quirino, Gregorio del Pilar, and San Emilio to reach the host town.

Gregorio del Pilar Mayor Rogelio Concepcion Bicasan Jr. stated that the local government plans to expand the event to establish the town’s historic trails as a major outdoor tourism destination. To prepare for more visitors, the municipal tourism office is currently training local out-of-school youth and unemployed residents to work as hiking guides alongside municipal forest guards.

Aside from the historic trails, the town is promoting local attractions like the Sibol Hot Spring and the Kankantuban rock formation. Visitors are also encouraged to try local products, such as Robusta coffee and a traditional beef dish called imbaliktad, as the town aims to use sports events to create local jobs.
