College Students Receive Financial Aid For Schooling

Ilocos Sur Graduating students receive cash grants to cover academic costs

A total of 2,980 graduating college students across Ilocos Sur received a P20,000 cash grant on August 5 to help pay for their academic expenses, the PIA reports.

The financial aid comes from the national government’s Bawat Barangay Makikinabang Program (BBMP), funded through the Socio-Civic Projects Fund. Liga ng mga Barangay (LnB)-Ilocos Sur and Region 1 Chapter President Constante Benzon explained that all 768 barangays in the province received P200,000 each. Half of that funding supports the Bagong Pilipinas Barangay Scholars initiative, which allocates P20,000 to five graduating college students per barangay.

To qualify for the grant, applicants must satisfy several criteria:

  • Be a bonafide resident of the barangay and graduating during the current school year
  • Come from a vulnerable household or be at risk of dropping out
  • Belong to a family where no member has previously completed college

Student beneficiaries expressed relief over the financial assistance. Zarykda Difuntorum, a communication student at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) from San Juan, said the funds directly cover her final requirements.

“This scholarship [will help cover] my thesis expenses and [reduce] the financial burden on my family,” Difuntorum said.

Cherry Joy Sagnep, a tourism student at Ilocos Sur Community College from Cabugao, emphasized the motivational value of the assistance.

“This is not only financial assistance but also an inspiration for us to continue and work hard in our studies. We will use it wisely and make it an inspiration to finish our education,” Sagnep said.

For barangays without graduating students, Benzon confirmed that officials are fast-tracking document verification for incoming third-year students and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) scholars to distribute the remaining funds.
