Resolution Proposed to Honor Outgoing Barangay Officials

PGLU reported that a provincial legislative board has proposed a resolution to formally honor outgoing village officials who are completing their terms of service. Introduced on August 18, 2026, the measure aims to recognize these local leaders for their community dedication, particularly those finishing nine consecutive years in office. This initiative addresses the lack of retirement pensions or regular benefits for these grassroots administrators.

Board Member Ramon Guio Ortega Jr., who also serves as the Liga ng mga Barangay La Union Chapter President, introduced the measure to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan. He noted that these public servants act as the primary link between the government and the public. According to the proposal, local leaders often perform their duties with very limited resources.

The proposed commendation specifically targets several groups of local leaders across the province’s barangays:

• Barangay captains (punong barangays) finishing their terms
• Barangay councilors (kagawads) set to step down in the coming months
• Officials who have completed three consecutive terms, totaling nine years of continuous service

These administrators currently receive no formal retirement pay or pension upon leaving office. Through this measure, the provincial government aims to express official appreciation for their years of public service and personal sacrifices before the upcoming transition of local leadership.
