The Department of Health is urging the public to undergo regular blood sugar screenings and adopt healthier daily habits to prevent diabetes and its severe health complications. The PIA reports this push comes after regional health authorities recorded 28,370 adults with Type 2 diabetes across the Ilocos Region in 2025.
In La Union and across Region 1, residents can access free medical consultations, lab tests, and preventive health screenings through government programs like PhilHealth’s YAKAP, the GAMOT program, and PuroKalusugan. These health services are available at primary healthcare facilities, including rural health units and barangay health stations in towns like San Fernando and Bauang.
Dr. Daniel Darius Aquino, head of the Non-Communicable Disease Unit at the DOH Ilocos Center for Health Development, emphasized that diabetes is not caused solely by eating sweets, but also by physical inactivity, smoking, vaping, alcohol consumption, and lack of sleep.
“Maintain a balanced diet, eat your meals on time, and stay physically active. Make healthier choices daily to reduce your risk of developing diabetes,” Aquino said.
Health authorities recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate daily exercise, eight to 10 hours of sleep, and annual blood sugar checks for adults. Key warning signs that require immediate medical attention include:
- Frequent urination and excessive thirst
- Persistent fatigue and unexplained weight loss
- Slow-healing wounds and numbness in the hands or feet
Unchecked diabetes can cause severe complications, including vision loss, nerve damage, chronic wounds, and kidney failure. “For those already diagnosed with diabetes, medicines should be paired with discipline in maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise,” Aquino added. Local residents may visit their nearest municipal health office or public hospital for screening and assistance.
