DOST Offers College Scholarships for Science and Engineering Students

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Ilocos Region is expanding its college scholarship program to support students pursuing degrees in science, technology, and engineering. The initiative, discussed during a media forum on August 17, 2026, aims to build a stronger workforce of local scientists and engineers by providing full financial and academic backing throughout their college years, reports the PIA.

This program directly benefits aspiring scientists and engineers in La Union, offering them a pathway to high-quality education while assisting with the costs. DOST Ilocos Region Project Technical Specialist I Nikko Ofo-ob explained that the program targets talented youth who want to build careers in these vital fields.

“In this program, we are enticing young talented Filipino youth to pursue a lifetime productive career in science and technology, and to ensure that we have scientists or highly skilled engineers here in the country who can further advance science and [technology],” Ofo-ob said.

The types of scholarship programs will fall under:

  • RA 7687: For students whose family income falls below the poverty threshold.
  • Merit Program: For students with high aptitude in science and mathematics, regardless of family income.
  • RA 10612: Fast-tracked science and mathematics education scholarships for teaching secondary schools.

Under the DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI) Undergraduate Scholarship, successful applicants will receive a comprehensive support package:

  • Monthly living allowance of ₱8,000.
  • Tuition and school fees support of up to ₱40,000 per academic year for those attending private universities.
  • Learning materials and internet connectivity assistance.
  • Transportation allowance, accident insurance, and thesis-related support.
  • Research dissemination grant of up to ₱50,000 to reimburse expenses for presenting research at conferences.

To ensure high-quality training, the agency also guides scholars toward priority courses that match national development needs. Ofo-ob emphasized the long-term goal of the program for its recipients.

“The DOST scholarship gives you the opportunity or the chance to enhance yourselves, with hopes that later on you will return and serve the Filipino people,” Ofo-ob said.
