Government Speeds Up Local Support Fund for Public Projects | San Fernando

Local executive offices are accelerating the implementation of the national Local Government Support Fund (LGSF) to broaden infrastructure and social service delivery across municipal communities. The national framework provides direct financial grants to local government units to construct basic facilities, repair rural roadways, and deliver social relief aid to low-income populations, a report from the PIA said

In La Union, Governor Mario Eduardo C. Ortega publicly endorsed the program on July 28, emphasizing that local jurisdictions rely on national support to fulfill community requirements.

“We need this Local Government Support Fund because the people need it. We are serving as the channel to cascade the President’s advocacy, especially to lower-income groups,” Ortega said.

Data from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) La Union show that several key public works projects have already been completed under the LGSF-Financial Assistance to Local Government Units (FALGU) initiative:

Bacnotan: Construction of a community sports facility
Santol: Construction of a public multipurpose building
Caba: Installation of a municipal water supply system
City of San Fernando: Rehabilitation of two farm-to-market roads

For the 2026 program cycle, 19 out of the 20 component local government units in La Union have active projects moving through formal development stages. This widespread participation demonstrates the broad reach of national development funds across the province’s towns and cities.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the provincial government received specialized LGSF funding targeted for direct food relief. Ortega explained that the provincial government will distribute rice allocations directly to residents in towns who have not yet received government aid.

“We will distribute the rice allocation given to the province directly to those in the municipalities who have not yet received assistance,” Ortega said.

Local officials are currently monitoring project timelines to guarantee that all intended municipal beneficiaries receive support efficiently and without unnecessary delays.

“As much as possible, we want every targeted beneficiary covered, and I believe we will achieve that,” Ortega said. The provincial government and DILG plan to finalize the remaining project distributions and construction targets before the end of 2026.
